Tutor Time Reading

Tutor Time Reading is our whole-school reading programme for Years 7 to 10. Each year group reads a carefully chosen novel together during morning tutor time, with the text always read aloud by the adult in the room. This approach models fluent, expressive reading while ensuring that all students, regardless of their reading experience or confidence, feel equal, supported and at ease. Reading is supported by discussion where complex themes arise and by clear definitions of Tier 2 vocabulary where appropriate. The aim is to give every student a shared reading journey, widen their world view and build the habit of daily reading.

Research from the National Literacy Trust highlights that regular exposure to rich vocabulary, complex syntax and well-crafted stories accelerates progress for all students; Tutor Time Reading ensures that every child, no matter their starting point, experiences carefully chosen texts that spark curiosity and strengthen comprehension.

In addition to longer novels, Tutor Time Reading makes purposeful use of carefully selected picture books. While often associated with younger readers, these texts allow students to explore big ideas in a compact form. Students are encouraged to think about what the author might be trying to say, who the book might be aimed at, and how the illustrations contribute to meaning. This approach shows that reading for pleasure is not defined by age or length and provides rich opportunities for discussion, interpretation and enjoyment for all students.

Tutor Time Reading also introduces students to a wide range of stories, genres and voices, helping them to discover what they enjoy and encouraging positive habits of reading widely and often. The programme is continually reviewed and developed in response to student voice, ensuring it remains engaging, inclusive and effective.

Each TTR book includes a short list of recommended follow-up reads. These suggestions help students continue their reading journey at home or through the school library. These book recommendations are also communicated home to parents/carers with each new book the form explores.
