Literacy at Allestree Woodlands

Our Literacy Vision

At Allestree Woodlands School, we believe that confident readers, writers and speakers can shape their own futures. Literacy sits at the heart of our curriculum; it opens doors far beyond the classroom and has the potential to empower each student. We want every student to leave us with the vocabulary to express themselves, the reading habits that nurture curiosity and empathy, and the writing skills needed for the world of study and work. Our vision is that every child should feel equipped, included and inspired through language.

Classroom strategies

Teachers explicitly teach key Tier 2 and Tier 3 vocabulary in every subject. Tier 2 vocabulary are the lower-frequency words that we hear less often in daily conversation, whereas Tier 3 vocabulary refers to subject-specific words. New words are introduced clearly, revisited often and applied in meaningful contexts, so students not only understand them but use them confidently.

Reading is part of daily classroom practice. Teachers model high quality reading aloud, guide students through challenging texts and help them build the stamina needed for longer reading. Every lesson supports comprehension and fosters genuine enjoyment. We use ‘track and read’ where students use their finger or uniform card to follow along with the words being read aloud by an adult reader.

Students learn how to craft well-structured, accurate and purposeful writing. They receive clear models, scaffolded steps and opportunities to plan, review and edit with a red pen task across all subjects. Accuracy, clarity and a strong sense of audience underpin our approach

We encourage students to speak thoughtfully and confidently. Structured talk, paired discussion and whole-class dialogue help students rehearse ideas, explore viewpoints and grow into articulate communicators. We use debating roles, choral speaking, and ‘Say It Again, Better’ to support students with developing these life-long skills.
