Attendance and Punctuality at Allestree Woodlands

At Allestree Woodlands School, we believe that school is about far more than academic learning. We want every child to experience belonging, feel supported and excited to attend school each day for many unmissable moments. We are proudly recognised as an Inclusive Attendance School and take a child-centred approach to attendance and punctuality. Attendance is a shared responsibility between the school, families and the wider community; together we can ensure all students attend regularly so they can aspire and achieve.

The Importance of Attendance

School attendance is not merely a requirement but a fundamental pillar of education. It plays a pivotal role in shaping academic success, personal development and future prospects, making it an indispensable aspect of any school experience. Regular attendance can have a significant impact on:

Regular attendance directly correlates with academic success. Children who attend school consistently, supported by their families, are more likely to keep up with the curriculum, perform better in exams and improve their life choices.

School is where children acquire knowledge and skills that are crucial for their personal and professional development. Missing days means missing out on valuable learning opportunities and unmissable classroom experiences.

Frequent absence can lead to gaps in learning that become increasingly difficult to close. Early communication and partnership between school and families helps address absence quickly and reduces the risk of long-term academic difficulties.

School provides a vital social environment for children to interact with peers, develop friendships and learn essential social skills. Consistent attendance ensures children remain connected to their peer group and have a stronger sense of belonging.

Consistent attendance supports the development of positive routines, time management and responsibility. Families play a key role in establishing these routines and reinforcing the importance.

When children attend regularly, teachers can build strong relationships, provide personalised support and monitor progress effectively, ensuring no child is left behind.

Regular attendance increases opportunities for children to engage in enrichment activities, sports and wider school experiences that support their overall development.

Families have a legal responsibility to ensure their child attends school regularly and the school is committed to working proactively with families to set high expectations, promote the benefits of good attendance, act early where concerns arise and ensure every child can access the full-time education to which they are entitled.

Reporting absences

What should parents do if their child is absent?

Telephone: 01332 551 921 or

Email: attendance@woodlands.ttct.co.uk

We endeavour to answer all telephone calls, but at busy times, and especially early in the morning, we are not always able to speak to everyone and if this is the case, please leave a message on the answer phone.

When telephoning the school, please state clearly your child’s name, tutor group, the reason for absence and the expected date of return. Please ensure you ring every day so we can account for your child’s absence.

We know that sometimes children cannot come to school because they are really unwell – and that’s the right thing to do for them and other students. However, medical advice is clear that children with a mild illness will often be well enough to attend – for example, if they have a cough or cold without a temperature. The NHS guidance: Is my child too ill for school? – NHS is designed to support parents/carers in their decision-making about mild illness.

What the school will do if your child is absent

If we have not heard from you, we will contact you on the first day of absence. If we have not been able to make contact, we will attempt a home visit. If a child is absent from school for more than 3 days, we will attempt to visit the home to check if any support is needed.

Appointments in advance

If you are letting us know about an appointment in advance, please email the Attendance Team at attendance@woodlands.ttct.co.uk

Unauthorised absences

The Law states that a Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN, or fine) may be issued for any unauthorised absences for 10 or more sessions (a session being a morning or an afternoon) within a 10-week period. This is not restricted to holidays in term time and could be cumulative within that period – for example, a student who is regularly absent for one day a week.
