Options Process

The GCSE options process is an important opportunity for students to choose their option subjects for GCSE study. Choices should not be made lightly as qualifications gained at GCSE will influence next steps beyond year 11.

The options process at Woodlands is designed to enable our students to select the best suite of subject for them. Please take the time to browse the information provided on this page, visit our options evening in-school on January 16th, discuss options at home and also with subject teachers to ensure that the best subject choices are being made.

On this page you will find useful information about the GCSE subjects offered to students studying their GCSEs at Woodlands in Year 10 and 11.

Year 9 Options Showcase Evening
Tuesday 13th January 2026 17:00 – 19:00

Year 9 Subject Evenings (CLOUD):
Tuesday 20th and Wednesday 21st January 2026 16:00 – 19:00

Options Choices Due Date:
Friday 30th January 2026

What subjects will I be studying at GCSE?

All students study a CORE Curriculum.

This includes English Language, English Literature, Maths, Science, Core PE and Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE).

English Baccalaureate Subjects:

All students study either Geography or History (or both if they choose Geography or History as an “option” subject).

It is recommended that students choose to study a modern foreign language from either French, German or Spanish
(see the GCSE Curriculum Information booklet for details).

Selecting your GCSE Options

1. Understand your options

Study the information on this Options Showcase page. Talk with your parents, subject staff and read the Curriculum Information Booklet to help you consider the subjects available to you for at GCSE level.

2. Select your courses

Make choices that are right for you. Your options are a very personal choice, so think about the subjects that you will enjoy and achieve well in. Consider how these might fit into your future plans and ‘next steps’…

3. Submit your options form

Decided upon your options? You will need to complete the Curriculum Options Form and ensure that it is submitted by the deadline date
